Foil stamped vs. full-color cocktail napkins

A metallic stamp or an unlimited-color print — a straight side-by-side from the people who make both.

The short answer

Choose foil for a solid logo or monogram that should catch the light: it is stamped in gold, rose gold, silver or copper and reads as expensive from across the bar. Choose full-color for artwork with gradients, illustration or photography, or when you want the color to run to every edge. Both come with a free mockup within 24 hours, a minimum order of 12 and standard turnaround of about 2 weeks.

Where foil wins

Foil bonds a metallic film to the sheet instead of laying ink on it, which is why the mark reflects the room rather than absorbing it. It is the finish for cocktail lounges, hotel bars and launch nights, and black stock with gold foil is the most-ordered combination we run because it photographs well in low light. Foil is unforgiving about artwork: it renders a solid shape beautifully and a gradient not at all, so our designers simplify the mark for free and show it on the napkin before the die is cut. It also stamps best on a firmer sheet, which is one reason to pair it with linen-feel stock. See foil stamped cocktail napkins or black and colored cocktail napkins.

Where full-color earns its place

Full-color digital printing removes the limit on colors, so a logo with a gradient, an illustrated character or a photograph prints as designed. It also unlocks full bleed: instead of a small mark on a white napkin, the color runs to every edge and the napkin becomes a branded object in its own right. With no plate setup, it suits a one-night activation with bespoke artwork as well as a house design. The trade is the base, which is white or ivory, so a dark napkin with a metallic mark is a foil job. See full-color cocktail napkins, or read how the methods differ in our cocktail napkin printing guide.

The verdict

Pick foil for a clean logo or monogram, dark or colored stock and a house napkin you will reorder.

Pick full-color for gradients, illustration, photography or edge-to-edge color on a white or ivory napkin.

Either way, the minimum order is 12 napkins and the finished order ships in about 2 weeks. A stamped monogram over a printed color block is also possible, and the mockup shows both layers. Send your logo and quantity through the quote form and we will mock up both so you can compare them on screen.
